'Aerosmith / Rocks (1976) Remaster (2009)' Review!
Coming off of their great success with 'Toys In The Attic' in 1975, and with their reputation as a band being solidified with great performances at Cleveland's 'World Series Of Rock' there was no doubt that anticipation for their 1976 release 'Rocks' was at an all-time high for the band! And, 'Aerosmith' delivered! 'Rocks' indeed does just that, it rocks out with all guns blazing! Right from the get-go, Steven Tyler lets loose with some demonic banshee cries on the killer cut, 'Back In The Saddle' that could make your blood curdle! Could anyone scream 'I'm back!' with more intensity then the demon of screamin' himself? But, to set The Smithers apart in a group of their own, Steven adds some yoddeling at the end just to keep it fresh! Yoddeling in Rock music?! Yes, and done with finessé! Surprises aside, it is the mighty riffs and guitar prowess of Brad Whitford & Joe Perry that make this bang more than worth its buck! 'Last Child', a brashing tribute to the ghetto, shows Mr. Whitford at his prime! 'Rats In The Cellar', a rip-soaring jaunt into the ghettos of the Bronx themselves! Joe Perry takes a swing at the lead vocal bat accompanied by Mr. Tyler for 'Combination', obviously! Tom Hamilton warns us about living it up a little too much in 'Sick As A Dog'! Brad warns us about destroying our planet with 'Nobody's Fault', an influential piece of music to many a Thrash-Rocker, indeed! 'Get The Lead Out' & 'Lick And A Promise' are a couple of great Rockers that make this album really cook with their bold lyrics, especially check-out 'Get The Lead Out' live, as Steven sings up a different 'young, spring chicken' than on vinyl! Finally, the single, 'Home Tonight' may be a bit on the soft side, but turns out to be quite a good ending to a great album all the way around. The remaster doesn't add much, but the rehearsal performance to what became 'Nobody's Fault', and a live version from 1976 of an early effort, 'Write Me (A Letter)' that proves the band has a lot of sparkle in that back catalogue, as well!
